Should You Shave Before Laser Hair Removal?

Yes—laser hair removal usually works best when the area is shaved beforehand while the follicle remains intact. Avoid waxing or plucking before treatment.

Short answer: yes. For laser hair removal, the area is usually shaved before the appointment so the laser can target pigment in the follicle without extra hair sitting above the skin. Follow the instructions from the clinic treating you.

Why shave instead of wax?

Laser treatment needs the hair follicle to be present. Shaving cuts hair at the skin surface but leaves the follicle in place. Waxing, tweezing and plucking pull hair from the follicle, which removes the target the laser is trying to treat.

At iBODY, clients are instructed to shave the area the day before treatment unless they are given different instructions for a specific situation.

What else should you avoid before laser?

Avoid tanning and self-tanner before treatment because changes in skin pigment can affect laser safety. Tell the provider about medications and products that may increase light sensitivity.

Do not hide recent sun exposure. A safe treatment plan is more important than keeping an appointment.

Why are several sessions needed?

Hair grows in cycles. Laser is most effective when a follicle is in an active growth phase, and not every follicle is in that phase at the same time. That is why laser hair removal is planned as a course rather than a single appointment.

Does skin tone change the laser choice?

It can. Different wavelengths interact with pigment differently, so skin tone and hair characteristics should be assessed before treatment. Patch testing is an important part of safe planning.
