Why the machine matters

Not every laser suits every skin tone.

A laser works by finding pigment. On deeper skin tones the difficulty is that there is pigment in the skin as well as the hair — so the wavelength has to be able to tell them apart.

Longer wavelength, deeper reach

A 1064nm Nd:YAG laser passes through the melanin in the upper layers of the skin and delivers its energy to the follicle instead. That is why it is the established choice for Fitzpatrick skin types IV to VI — the deeper-tone end of the six-point scale dermatologists use to classify skin — where shorter-wavelength systems carry more risk of burns and discolouration.

Assessed, then patch tested

We assess your skin type and hair before recommending anything, and patch test before a full session. No reputable clinic should treat you without doing both — and we would rather turn a booking away than take a risk with your skin.

What to expect

A course, not a single session.

Hair grows in cycles, and a laser only affects follicles that are actively growing. That is why results build over a series of appointments spaced weeks apart — and why anyone promising permanent removal in one visit is overselling.

Before your appointment

  • Shave the area the day before
  • Do not wax or pluck beforehand
  • Avoid sun and self-tanner for two weeks
  • Tell us about light-sensitising medication

Start with a consultation

We would rather assess your skin and set a realistic expectation than sell you a package that does not suit your hair type. Book a consultation and we will tell you honestly what to expect.

Also at the clinic

When the laser is not the right tool.

A laser needs pigment to find the hair. For the hair it cannot see, and the areas where precision matters more than coverage, we offer two older, well-proven methods.

Electrolysis

Treats one follicle at a time with a fine probe, which is exactly why it works where lasers cannot: white, grey, blonde and fine hair have no pigment for a laser to target, and electrolysis does not care. Slower by nature, so it suits smaller areas and finishing work after a laser course.

Threading

A twisted cotton thread lifts hair straight from the follicle — no chemicals, no heat, no wax on the skin. The precision method for brows, upper lip and face, and a good option for skin too sensitive for waxing.

Common questions

Answers before you book.

Is laser hair removal safe for darker skin tones?

With the right laser, yes. Longer-wavelength lasers such as 1064nm Nd:YAG pass through the pigment in the upper skin and target the hair follicle instead, which is why they are the established choice for Fitzpatrick skin types IV to VI — the deeper-tone end of the six-point scale dermatologists use to classify skin. Shorter-wavelength systems are more likely to treat surrounding pigment as a target, which is where burns and discolouration come from. We assess your skin type first and patch test before a full session.

How many sessions will I need?

Most people need a course rather than a single treatment, because hair grows in cycles and a laser only affects follicles in the active growth phase. Your practitioner gives you a realistic estimate for your hair type and the area being treated at your consultation, rather than selling a fixed package up front.

Does it hurt?

Most patients describe it as a hot snap against the skin rather than sharp pain, and modern systems use cooling to make it more comfortable. Sensitivity varies by area — coarser hair and bonier areas tend to feel more.

What should I do before my appointment?

Shave the area the day before rather than waxing or plucking, since the laser needs the follicle intact to work. Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for two weeks beforehand, and tell us about any medication you are taking that increases light sensitivity.

Is laser hair removal covered by insurance?

No. Laser hair removal is a cosmetic treatment, so it is not covered by extended health plans or OHIP. The rehabilitation side of our clinic — physiotherapy, chiropractic and massage — is a different matter, and we direct bill most major insurers for that.

Can I book a consultation before committing?

Yes, and we would rather you did. A consultation lets us assess your skin type and hair, explain which system suits you, and patch test before you commit to a course of treatment.
