TMJ & jaw pain

TMJ and jaw pain treatment in North York.

Clicking, clenching, restricted opening, pain that spreads to the ear or temple — the jaw rarely acts alone, so we assess the jaw, the neck and the habits driving both.

What is going on

A joint you use two thousand times a day.

The temporomandibular joint works every time you speak, chew, swallow or clench — and clenching is the one most people do without noticing, especially under stress or in their sleep. Most jaw pain we see is muscular overwork around the joint rather than damage inside it.

What we commonly see

  • Clicking or popping with pain when opening
  • Morning jaw tightness from night-time clenching
  • Pain radiating to the ear, temple or cheek
  • A jaw that feels tired or heavy when chewing
  • Jaw tension that travels with neck pain and headaches

How we treat it

Assessment of the jaw, neck and the habits loading them comes first. Treatment usually combines hands-on soft tissue work in and around the jaw muscles, Dolphin MPS microcurrent point stimulation where appropriate, and the neck treatment that jaw problems so often need — plus practical guidance on the clenching side.

Straight answers

What we will not do.

We will not treat a bite problem that belongs with your dentist, and we will not keep treating a jaw that is not responding without telling you. If your assessment points to dental work, a night guard conversation or a physician review, we say so at the first visit.

Common questions

Answers before you book.

My jaw clicks when I open it — is that a problem?

Painless clicking on its own is common and often needs no treatment at all. Clicking that comes with pain, locking, or a jaw that deviates to one side when opening is worth an assessment, because those tell us more about the joint and the muscles around it than the sound does.

What is Dolphin MPS, and why is it used on jaws?

Dolphin MPS is microcurrent point stimulation — a very low-current device applied to specific points, used here alongside hands-on soft tissue work for jaw and facial muscle tension. Your practitioner explains what it involves before anything is used, and it is one tool within a broader plan rather than the plan itself.

Do I see a dentist or a physiotherapist for TMJ pain?

Often both have a role. Tooth, bite and night-grinding questions belong with your dentist, and we will say so plainly when that is what your assessment suggests. The muscular and joint side — tension, restricted opening, pain that worsens with stress or chewing — is what we treat here.

Can neck problems cause jaw pain?

They often travel together. The jaw and upper neck share overlapping muscles and nerve supply, which is why jaw treatment frequently includes the neck — and why we assess both rather than treating the jaw in isolation.

Is TMJ treatment covered by insurance?

Most extended health plans cover physiotherapy and massage therapy, and we direct bill the major providers. Where a plan covers treatment under a specific category, our front desk confirms how your plan handles it before treatment begins.
