Neck pain & headaches

Neck pain and headaches in North York.

Neck pain and headaches often travel together, because they frequently share a cause. Treating one while ignoring the other tends to give short-lived relief.

The connection

The upper neck refers pain into the head.

Nerves from the top of the neck share pathways with those supplying the head and face. When the joints and muscles there are irritated, the brain can register the result as a headache — which is why treating the neck sometimes resolves headaches that painkillers never quite touched.

What we commonly see

  • Stiffness and restricted turning, often worse one side
  • Headaches starting at the base of the skull
  • Aching across the shoulders and upper back
  • Pain that builds through a day at a screen
  • Tension that returns every time work gets busy

How we treat it

Hands-on treatment to restore movement in the stiff segments, soft tissue work for the muscles compensating around them, and specific strengthening for the deep neck muscles — plus a practical look at how your day is loading your neck.

If it started with a collision

Whiplash is treated differently.

Neck pain that began after a car accident follows its own recovery pattern and its own funding route — through your auto insurer rather than your extended health plan. We complete the OCF paperwork for you.

Common questions

Answers before you book.

Can neck problems really cause headaches?

Yes. Headaches arising from the joints, muscles and nerves of the upper neck are well recognised — they are usually felt at the base of the skull, behind the eye or across one side of the head, and often come with neck stiffness. Not every headache is cervicogenic, which is why the assessment looks at the pattern before treating it as one.

Is my posture to blame?

Posture matters less than most people expect, and position changes matter more. There is no single correct way to sit; the neck tends to complain about long periods in any one position. Rather than prescribing a perfect posture, we look at your working set-up and how often you move within it.

Is neck cracking during treatment safe?

Cervical manipulation is one option among several, not a requirement. Serious complications are rare but reported, so your practitioner will screen for risk factors, explain what they are proposing and why, and use gentler techniques if manipulation is not appropriate for you. You can also simply decline it — say so and we will treat you another way.

How long will it take to improve?

Acute neck strain often eases substantially within a few weeks. Long-standing neck pain with associated headaches usually takes longer and depends heavily on what happens between appointments. Your practitioner gives you a realistic estimate after assessing you.

Is treatment covered by insurance?

Most extended health plans cover physiotherapy, chiropractic and massage therapy, and we direct bill the major providers so you are not paying up front and waiting for reimbursement.
