Painful Under-the-Skin Pimple: What Should You Do?

Deep painful pimples are tempting to squeeze, but that usually makes things worse. Here is what you can safely do at home and when to get medical help.

Short answer: do not try to force a deep pimple to the surface by squeezing it. Keep the area clean, use gentle acne care and consider a warm compress. Repeated deep, painful breakouts may need medical treatment.

Why is squeezing a deep pimple a bad idea?

A deep inflamed bump sits below the surface, so there may be nothing to extract. Pressure from squeezing can push inflammation deeper, damage surrounding skin and increase the chance of a lingering mark or scar.

What can you do at home?

Use a gentle cleanser and avoid scrubs. A warm compress may feel soothing and can be used as part of simple home care. An appropriate acne treatment such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid may help depending on the type of breakout and how your skin tolerates it.

A hydrocolloid patch can protect a spot from touching and picking, but it is not a magic extractor for a deep cyst that has no surface opening.

What should you not put on it?

Skip toothpaste, straight lemon juice, harsh alcohol and abrasive DIY mixtures. Burning or drying the skin does not make a deep pimple heal faster and may leave more irritation behind.

When should you see a doctor or dermatologist?

If deep painful pimples are recurring, leaving scars, appearing in large numbers or not improving with a sensible routine, medical acne treatment may be appropriate. Seek care sooner if you have rapidly worsening redness, significant swelling or other concerning symptoms.
