When pain or stiffness starts interfering with daily life, many people are unsure whether to book physiotherapy or chiropractic care. Both can be used for musculoskeletal concerns, but the assessment style, treatment approach and emphasis may differ.

When physiotherapy may be a useful starting point

Physiotherapy commonly focuses on movement, strength, mobility, function and recovery after injury or surgery. A physiotherapist may use exercise, education, manual therapy and other evidence-informed techniques based on the assessment.

When chiropractic care may be a useful starting point

Chiropractic care commonly focuses on musculoskeletal problems involving the spine, joints and movement. Treatment may include manual care, mobility work, exercise and advice depending on the individual assessment.

What if you are still unsure?

You do not need to diagnose yourself before booking. At a multidisciplinary clinic, an assessment can help identify an appropriate starting point and whether another discipline should also be involved. This article is general education and does not replace an individual assessment.
